We hit the Pacific first at Bodega Bay, we struggled in this little town to find a spot to park with the RV, but after stopping we found the couple restaurants not exactly what we were looking for, they had seafood, but that was not the star. So we resigned ourselves to eating sandwiches and headed out to Bodega Head for a view during our lunch. What we stumbled on here was gold, Spud Point Crab company. This was exactly the fish shack we were searching for. They had about 8 things on their menu, we opted for the crab sandwich and clam chowder. Both were excellent, the sandwich came on a nice buttery roll, just the right mix of soft and crispy, 1/4 pound of crab was a good mix of lumps, and the sauce was a chill mayo with just a little zing to elevate the sweet crab, absolutely delicious. They said they were known for their clam chowder, which was tasty, it was heavier spiced than anything I had in Boston with less clammy taste. I enjoyed it, but would still rather head back to Boston for the chowda.
We ended up camping a few miles north on 1, at Wrights Beach. It was a beautiful spot right on the beach.
We took a walk on the beach which went for at least a mile, at the turnaround point we just happened to spot the spout of a whale. We sat down and watched a pair of whales slowly feed just offshore, they were only 100-200 yards away. We would see the spouts, and then the body slowly gliding along the surface, with the occasional flipper in the air or the fluke coming up as they worked the shallows. We slowly walked back to our campground, and the whales followed in the same direction, we were able to watch them for over an hour. Though in all that time it was hard to get a good picture.
Overall this part of the coast was still quite rugged and not very populated. The few towns were small and quaint, and during crab season I would love to come back for a week and relax on a cottage overlooking the sea, eat some more seafood and taste some sonoma county wines.
